It’s less than 90 days to E-Day – Election Day. That may seem like a lot of time, but before you know it, the election will be on top of us. In many states there will be primary elections in August or September to narrow the field. The point here is that there isn’t nearly as much time left as you may think.

One critical question must be asked: Are YOU registered to vote? Your spouse? Your shooting buddies? And if you are already registered, have you considered applying for an absentee (mail-in) ballot?

Registering to vote is far easier than it was in the past. But you have to do it NOW. In many states, you must be registered at least 30 days prior to an election, in order to vote. See what I mean about time flying?

There are several ways to register. You can visit your city/county clerk, or with the Registrar of Voters. They’re located at your local city or county hall. You don’t even have to take a trip downtown to register. Most libraries carry voter registration forms. By federal law, drivers license offices also offer voter registration.

Election Day is November 7. That’s right in the middle of hunting season in many states. Absentee balloting is as easy as registering to vote. Visit one of the aforementioned offices and request an absentee ballot. In many states, you can use an absentee ballot simply to vote by mail. Mail-in voters have about a 25 percent higher voter participation rate than citizens who vote in person.

Take 30 minutes NOW to be sure you’re ready to perform your basic right – and responsibility – of citizenship. The only vote that doesn’t count is the one that isn’t cast.
