BELLEVUE, WA – The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms today insisted that President George Bush and members of Congress “Stand Solid On Sovereignty” on Monday, July 9, the opening day of a United Nations Conference on Small Arms and Light Weapons at UN headquarters in New York City.

“In conjunction with this conference,” said CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron, “the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) is promoting a ‘Small Arms Destruction Day.’ Gun owners should call or e-mail Congress and the White House July 9, and tell our leaders ignore this publicity stunt, and instead defend U.S. sovereignty.”

Global gun prohibitionists reportedly plan to write a treaty requiring governments to register, license and eventually confiscate and destroy all privately-owned firearms.

“I spent a career in the US Marine Corps, defending our Constitution and national sovereignty,” Waldron said. “When I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, I did not abandon my oath, which is virtually the same oath to which members of Congress and the president swear. This conference is an affront to anyone who takes that solemn pledge.

“It is especially insulting that the UN would gather here, on American soil, on the 225th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence to plan this gun grab,” Waldron stated. “This effort to deprive American citizens of their gun rights is the supreme slap in the face to all of those who have made the supreme sacrifice defending our way of life.”

“Small Arms Destruction Day” is supported by the United Kingdom, Bali, Brazil and the Netherlands.

“American gun owners unselfishly sent firearms to England during WWII, so that British subjects would have a fighting chance against the Nazi threat,” Waldron said. “America’s ‘citizen soldiers’ came to their rescue. They should be ashamed for attacking our liberty.”

On July 9, CCRKBA Communications Director Dave Workman urges gun owners to call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and leave messages for their Senators and Congressional representatives.

Workman suggested calling the following numbers to insist that firearm civil rights be protected:

The White House: (202) 456-1414 or e-mail at: president@whitehouse.gov
Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle at (202) 224-5556,or via e-mail at: tom_daschle@daschle.senate.gov
Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott at (202) 224-2708, or via e-mail at: senatorlott@lott.senate.gov
